A "Permanent resident" status is more advantageous than the other statuses of residence because it does not limit the status holder's activities or period of stay. It is granted when certain conditions are met by those who are already residing in Japan under another status of residence. The application will be examined much more closely than other applications such as changing the status of residence or extending the period of stay. Basic requirements; 1.The person is of good conduct. 2.The person has sufficient assets or the ability to live independently. 3.The person’s permanent residence is regarded to be in accordance with the interests of Japan.
The person has stayed in Japan for more than 10 years ( 5 years or more with a work type status) consecutively.
The person has been never sentenced to a fine or imprisonment. The person fulfills public duties such as tax payments.
The period of stay currently granted is 3 years or longer.
There is no possibility that the person could do harm from the viewpoint of protection of to public health.
※ 1. and 2. above do not apply to spouses and children of Japanese nationals, special permanent residents or permanent residents, and requirement 2. does not apply to those who have been recognized as refugees.
Relaxation of 10-year residence requirement to; (1-year residence)
A spouse of a Japanese national, special permanent resident or permanent resident in a marital relationship for more than 3 years consecutively.
A child of a Japanese national, special permanent resident or permanent resident.
A person who has more than 80 points on the point sheet of "Highly skilled professionals".
(3-year residence)
A person who has more than 70 points on the point sheet of "Highly skilled professionals".
(5-year residence)
A long term resident.
A person recognized to have made a contribution to Japan in diplomatic, social, economic, cultural or other fields.
